Bioinformatics Team

The interdisciplinary team at the Center for Artificial Intelligence conducts research on the application of machine learning techniques in biology. Currently, the team is developing models for predicting the functions of bacteriophage proteins—viruses that infect bacteria.

So far, very little is known about the functions of most bacteriophage proteins, often referred to as “biological dark matter.” This lack of knowledge makes it difficult to understand viruses that are widespread in oceans, soil, and even human and animal bodies.

As natural enemies of bacteria, bacteriophages could become one of the most effective weapons in combating antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
